on the campaign trail in ohio this week, romney weighing in on the performance of ohio senator rob portman, who has been playing president obama in romney's practice debates. >> do you know what he does on weekends? do you know what he does? he plays barack obama. can you believe that? he does. he plays barack obama. he plays him well too. i hate to tell you. we get the chance to debate one another after the hour and a half or so is over, i want to kick him out of the room or something. he is so good. >> yesterday afternoon governor romney passing out a little beef jerky to the members of the press corps on the flight to pennsylvania. any vegetarians on the plane apparently out of luck. president obama doesn't just have the edge in the polls, he also has the edge when it comes to merchandise. the actual sales figures have not been released yet, but each campaign's merchandise orders are made public in fec documents. the obama campaign ordered $6.7 million in research for resale according to monthly filings. the romney campaign $1.6 million. >>> the state of the voter id battles across this coun

. romney is not strongly over performing. you think a tax cut message might resonate. the politics have changed considerably. there are many conservative folks who have talked about the idea and some of calling for marginal tax cuts, why don't you call for a dramatic expansion of the child-care tax credit th. >> some say it barack obama represented the gary hart vote as well as jesse jackson. will you ever have a republican primary candidate who can unite those sensibilities as well? the problem that mitt romney faces is that initially he had a plan that was less have the capital and then tax for middle earners. a total marginal change. then he felt right santorum might defeat him. he reached a plan designed to appeal to the editorial page. we said let's do a really big tax of one and then let's get back on them on one that would get these urban socially liberal voters in states we're not going to win regardless. you get parents of children to pay dramatically lower taxes. that is a thing i would imagine would resonate with voters. i think this is a problem for some of the candidates. >

that governor romney needs to have a very strong performance at the debate. and if he does and if he's then able to be consistent every day thereafter he could turn things around. so i think again obama's team is not taking anything for granted. >> karen is exactly right, alex. let me just say. this the romney team went for, what three weeks, 3 1/2 weeks, never got to talk about what they wanted to talk about. some of that was self-inflicted, some wasn't. but from the time the hurricane was they thought was aiming at tampa they went a long time before they could got about -- they got a chance to talk about the economy. i think karen is exactly right. coming out of the debate i think there has to be a renewed effort on the part of the romney campaign to no matter what other forces are going on to stick with the economy and see if they can sell that. >> is there any thought that the romney camp, rich, takes a look at all these numbers and says any way you look at this election it's going to be historic, you're either going to re-elect a president who has higher unemployment numbers than any electe

as underdogs so we're coming into this debate very realistic that mitt romney is likely to win, if he plays his cards right. if he performs and fills in those details and has that conversation with the american people instead of having, you know, a punching match and just leveling insults at the president like he's done over the past two years, if he fills in his policy details, talks in specifics about his plans for the future, he could win this debate. but you know what, the president is treating these debates the same way we treated the conventions. that it's not about just that night. it's about an ongoing conversation with the american people. it's not just about the people in the room or the people, no offense to cnn, in the cnn booth. it's about the people sitting at home and the type of conversation that we want to have with them over time. it's a continuation of that conversation about where the president wants to take this country and his specific plans to move us forward. >> talking of conversations, he chose to appear on "the view" in the last week rather than talk to world leaders

and many people are describing them as mitt romney's last best chance to establish himself as a serious contender worthy of the white house. it's happened before. john kennedy, ronald reagan, george w. bush, all bounced higher in the polls after credible debate performances and went on to win the white house. whatever the outcome, most agree it's the debates that will give us our best opportunity to evaluate these candidates, sort out their positions and separate truth from fiction. not a moment too soon. according to a new survey from the annenberg public policy center at the university of pennsylvania, with a little over a month to go before election day, the public has a lot to learn about the 2012 presidential race. among its findings, only 51% know the romney-ryan plan would preserve traditional medicare for those 55 and older and retain it as an option for those now younger than that. only about half knew that mitt romney would keep the bush tax cuts in place. fewer than half knew that romney and not obama had promised to increase defense spending. only 23% were aware that payroll
